What are the common surface treatment processes for flanges?

The surface treatment processes of flanges are diverse, aiming to enhance the corrosion resistance, wear resistance, appearance and service life of the flanges. Here are some common surface treatment processes for flanges: 

1. Galvanizing process: 

Overview: Galvanizing involves coating the surface of the flange with a layer of zinc to prevent rusting and corrosion. 

Classification: There are two types: hot-dip galvanizing and electro-galvanizing. The hot-dip galvanizing coating has uniform thickness, strong adhesion, and excellent corrosion resistance, but it has higher energy consumption; the electro-galvanizing process has high production efficiency and low pollution, but the coating thickness is relatively thinner. 

2. Thermal Spraying Process: 

Overview: Thermal spraying involves heating metal or metal alloy powders to a temperature above their melting point, and then spraying them at high speed onto the surface of the flange to form a uniform and dense coating. 

Advantages: Strong coating adhesion, excellent corrosion resistance, adjustable coating thickness, capable of meeting the requirements of various applications. 

Disadvantages: The equipment cost is high, and the powder utilization rate during the spraying process is relatively low. 

3. Electrophoresis Process: 

Overview: Electrophoresis involves immersing the flange in an electrolytic tank containing electrophoretic paint. Under the influence of an electric field, the paint particles deposit on the surface of the flange, forming a coating. 

Advantages: Excellent corrosion resistance and strong adhesion, capable of forming a uniform film, and environmentally friendly. 

Disadvantage: The colors are relatively monotonous. 

4. Surface cleaning and passivation treatment: 

Cleaning: Use chemical cleaning (such as acid washing, alkaline washing) or mechanical cleaning (such as sandblasting, polishing) to remove oil stains, oxide scales and other impurities from the surface of the flange. 

Passivation: Immerse the flange in a nitric acid solution or a dedicated passivation solution to form a dense oxide film on its surface, thereby enhancing the corrosion resistance. 

5. Electroplating treatment: 

Overview: Electroplating involves coating the surface of a flange with a layer of metal, such as nickel or chromium, to enhance its wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and decorative properties. 

Common types of electroplating: Electroplating with nickel can enhance corrosion resistance and surface smoothness; electroplating with chromium can improve wear resistance and surface hardness. 

6. Spraying treatment: 

Overview: Spraying involves applying a protective layer on the surface of the flange, such as polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and ceramic coatings, etc. 

Advantages: The flanges treated by spraying have excellent corrosion resistance, high temperature resistance and wear resistance, and are suitable for applications in extreme environments. 

7. Other processes: 

Such processes as painting and rust prevention treatment can be selected based on specific requirements and application scenarios. 

In conclusion, the surface treatment processes for flanges are diverse, and each process has its own unique advantages and applicable scope. When making a choice, one should consider various factors such as the material of the flange, the usage environment, performance requirements, and cost budget comprehensively to ensure the selection of the most suitable surface treatment process.
